Temperature Detection System Now Empowering Organizations for Detection Elevated Temperature Detection

Friday March 27, 2020

COVID-19 is putting our nation and the world to the ultimate test. How can industry, government, and individuals work together, mobilize our best ideas and resources, and flatten the curve as quickly as possible? The American private sector is working around the clock to step up and help stem the tide of the COVID-19 crisis, from Google and Medtronic & Tesla to 3M and even Dyson pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

We’ve also heard the call and, earlier this month about, we released the Athena Security  Elevated Temperature Detection System.  The COVID crisis is multi-faceted, but helping organizations and hospitals screen people upon entry to their facilities can be one of the most impactful ways to prevent further infection through AI-powered, systematic triage. We’re also donating 50% of profits from this initiative to the crisis directly to the Small businesses and individuals.

Only a few weeks in, we’re getting great reception and it’s already being implemented at Capital Factory. We have received more than 1,000 orders and we’re working around the clock on fulfillment.

Here’s how it’s working to #flattenthecurve:

  • AI software and a dual thermal-visual camera
Athena Security has developed AI software and a machine-vision surveillance platform that sits on top of most relevant camera models. As a software company, we don’t manufacture the cameras ourselves; we source highly accurate NDAA-compliant cameras for the bundles, and continuously monitor for the best products and prices for our bundles. In the Fever Detection System, the visual camera records in parallel with the infrared thermal camera so that we can show a picture to identify the subject.

  • Automated screening in the elevated temperature detection zone
From there, the AI platform is automatically set up with an alert threshold of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (user-set option). This reduces the demand on operating staff — and frees them up for more important work — because Athena Fever Detection is “always on.” Clients have told us it’s already translating to trust among the public that no one with a fever is entering this site.

  • Fever alarm and notification
Temperatures above the threshold are then automatically sent to our web and mobile apps just like our Gun Detection alerts; Athena is best utilized as the first of a two-checkpoint system in which fever is then confirmed by a medical thermometer.

As we iterate rapidly, we’re also working on improvements to the system every day. For example, we’d love to find a way to better manage potential crosswinds or HVAC interference. We’re also looking at additional ways to add value to hardware through our AI platform; we just partnered with a stethoscope company to allow remote diagnostics for lung infections to help the Coronavirus battle. We’ll keep you updated as things progress.

We’re extremely proud of our entire team getting this into the hands of the organizations that need them most.
